Jackson Pollock at the Guggenheim jackson pollock funAn update on the last post about the Jackson Pollock site online. I mentioned that there were no colors to choose from, but there is. You just have to click your mouse and the color will change.
So, here’s my work in color (yes, it says “art”)

Irv also mentioned the Jackson Pollock exhibition of works on paper at the Guggenheim in New York.
“Both drippers and anti-drippers who are serious about 20th century art will find the exhibition of works on paper by Pollock rewarding viewing at the Guggenheim in NYC. There is something of a family relationship with the painter since Peggy supported him for a time in his worst days in return for which the museum can now boast of adequate coverage of his career in this medium.” Irv

pumpkin carvingIt’s Friday the 13th, so why not carve a pumpkin?. A New York artist has published a pumpkin carving tutorial online.

They’re definitely more interesting than the usual three holes and a slit for the mouth pumpkins. The artist has a gallery of pumpkin works online.

“Picking out the right pumpkin is very important. You need a pumpkin with a thick wall. To get this kind you will have to choose one that is very heavy for its size. Also avoid perfectly round pumpkins and opt for ones that have a protruding ridge that sticks out on one side. These shapes make nice faces as you could imagine how difficult it would be to carve a 3-D face onto a shallow flat surface.” Ray Villafane

kate moss by banksyThe British graffiti artist Banksy has been getting a lot of media attention in recent months by painting elephants and tampering with Paris Hilton CDs. He pokes fun at fame and uses it to his advantage, which has been good for sales of his work.

A series of Kate Moss paintings in the style of Andy Warhol were sold at a Sotheby’s art auction for a record £50,400. Another work that uses Leonardo’s Mona Lisa sold for £57,600. They went for five times the auction estimates and more than doubled the previous high of Banksy.

Sotheby’s said “It’s quite sensational to go over five times the low estimate. I believe Kate Moss was happy about Banksy using her image in an iconic way” and “It’s not often we sell works with spray paints but we’ll be seeing a lot more of Banksy as he seems to be building up a global presence”. BBC

Other notable artists to work with the model Kate Moss include Marc Quinn and Lucian Freud (Freud’s Kate Moss painting went on to sell for more than $7 million at Christies).

draw your own furnitureThis idea reminds me of that Picasso video/photo where the little Spanish master is drawing a bull’s head or a face (I can’t remember what it was) in the air with something. Ok, I didn’t explain that properly, but those that have seen it will know what I mean!
Update: Here’s the picture of Picasso that I was talking about, thanks to Brian.

“The four FRONT members have developed a method to materialize free hand sketches. They make it possible by using a unique method where two advanced techniques are combined. Pen strokes made in the air are recorded with Motion Capture and become 3D digital files; these are then materialized through Rapid Prototyping into real pieces of furniture.” Sketch Furniture

I think it would be great to use this technology to create sculpture, rather than the wobbly looking furniture they have made with it. I guess the furniture is a way of commercializing the idea.

Record Price for Jackson Pollock Painting most expensive painting in the worldThe New York Times has reported that a Jackson Pollock drip painting owned by David Geffen has been sold for $140 million. If confirmed, this would make it the most expensive painting in the world.

“Just last month Mr. Geffen sold two other 20th-century paintings a Jasper Johns and a Willem de Kooning for a total of $143.5 million. Given that he is among many business figures who has expressed interest in buying The Los Angeles Times, media industry analysts speculated that he was trying to raise cash for a potential bid. The Pollock, a densely tangled composition in browns and yellows, is unusually large, measuring about 4 by 8 feet, and was painted on fiberboard”. NY Times (may require free registration to view full article)

It looks like a lot of major art collectors want to own “the most expensive painting in the world” and are prepared to pay anything for it. I’m not saying that Jackson Pollock or Gustav Klimt don’t deserve to have such a title, but it would be interesting to see what buyers are now willing to pay for an important work by Vincent van Gogh or Pablo Picasso.
